Designing Effective Assessment

Designing Effective Assessment

We use assessment to both support student learning and to certify that learning has occurred. Furthermore, an effectively designed assessment task allows students to demonstrate the extent or level of learning that has been achieved. It is important to provide a valid and fair means to distinguish between students with excellent, good and poor levels of achievement.

There are certain fundamental qualities or principles such as fairness, validity and reliability that we must heed when designing good assessment.

Designing truly effective assessment cannot be done in isolation; or as a last minute add on. It requires careful planning and consideration at the many different stages involved.
