Trapped Ions for Quantum Computing

Microscopes are often used to look at small objects like cells, but even cells consist of many atoms. We have developed a new kind of microscope that can image a single atom, with resolution near the theoretical limit of one wavelength. We use a laser to illuminate the atom; at the right laser wavelength, the atom glows. When we look at the laser beam passing by the atom, we can see the shadow cast by the atom. We achieve the best shadow-imaging performance allowed by quantum mechanics.
