Perspectives:Asia | In search of safe ground in the Pacific
John Rodsted has had a rich and varied career. He has worked as a photographer for 40 years, activist, parachute instructor, stuntman, author, film maker, wilderness guide, expedition leader and professor.He has just returned from the United Nations in Geneva where he launched his book In Search of Safe Ground in the Pacific. This is a study of left over munitions throughout the Pacific from World War 2 and how they impact today's Pacific societies.

Join us as Dr Natalegawa shares his insights on the challenges and prospects for leadership in our region, including within ASEAN.Dr Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa (Dr Natalegawa) served as the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia from 2009-2014 and currently serves as a member of the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation.
He is the author of a book titled Does ASEAN Matter? A View From Within.

Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: Everyday torture: An ecological approach
In many countries throughout the world, torture, and cruel and inhuman treatment and punishment are not exceptional acts, but form part of the routine practice of security sector and law enforcement organisations. âDistinct from the "spectacular torture' that attracts the gaze of the international community, this type of torture often recedes into the background. This seminar explores extensive empirical work conducted on the use of torture by the police in Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: Their dignity requires a retinue: Ambedkar on rank, dignity and moral worth
Jeremy Waldron argues that human dignity should be conceived primarily as an 'aristocratic' rank now conferred on all persons within sets of legal norms and practices. In this approach, dignity is constituted by law and closely tied to equality under it. This article critiques such a conception via the work of BR Ambedkar (1891-1956), India's revered champion of Dalits and architect of its 1950 Constitution.
