In this presentation, Dr Michael Ckarke, The Australian National University (ANU) provides an exploration of a number of critical questions with respect to the Xinjiang emergency: what factors (historical, political/ideological, social) have contributed to the CCP's turn to mass "re-education" at this juncture; the implications of the detention centres for the governance of Xinjiang (and China more broadly); and the implcations for China's foreign policy.

In this presentation, Adjunct Associate Professor David Schak, Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University compares the development of civility in mainland China and Taiwan. His recently published book, Civility and Its Development: The Experiences of China and Taiwan analyses the social conditions needed for civility to become established in a society and argues that the attempts to impose civility top-down from the state are ineffective.
