Suicide in India

Suicide in India

Principal speaker

Lakshmi Vijayakumar

Over 130,000 people die by suicide every year in India. The suicide rate increased by 43.5% from 6.2 in 1980 to 8.9 in 1990 and by 28% from 8.9 in 1990 to 11.2 in 2011. About 76% of suicides in India are completed by persons between 15-44 years of age. Poisoning (mainly by pesticides), hanging and self immolation were the common methods used.
Suicide is a multidimensional problem and, hence, suicide prevention programs should also be multidimensional. The priority areas are: reducing the availability of and access to pesticide; reducing alcohol availability and consumption; promoting responsible media reporting of suicide: promoting and supporting NGOs; improving the capacity of primary care workers and specialist mental health services; providing support to those bereaved by suicide; and training the gatekeepers, such as teachers, police officers, practitioners of alternate systems of medicine, and faith healers. Examples of limiting access to pesticides, development of media guidelines and intervention for suicide attempters will be discussed.
