The role of attribution theory in the organisational sciences: current reserach and future directions

Principal speaker

Professor Mark Martinko

Abstract:

“The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate how attribution processes play a central role in goal oriented organizational behaviours. The presentation will begin with a quick overview of attribution theory, followed by a discussion of attribution biases and attribution styles. We will then focus on research which demonstrates the implications of attribution processes for leader-member relations. Next we will discuss the applications of attribution processes in the areas of learned helplessness/ empowerment, aggression, and other areas such as performance appraisals, selection, and individual differences. Throughout the presentation I will summarise the results of my research as well as ongoing research projects. The presentation will conclude by addressing some of the criticisms of attribution theory and by pointing to areas where attribution research is likely to make significant contributions in the future. “
