Why strong national environmental law is good for business

In this public lecture Griffith alumni Senator Larissa Waters will argue the business case for strong national environmental laws. She explores the purpose and power of national legislation in building a socially equitable, sustainable and prosperous society. Senator Waters will also investigate some of the challenges obstructing the introduction of rigorous national environmental laws. Finally, she will look at solutions to our environmental problems that support the interests of business, the wider community and the natural environment.

Larissa Waters is the first Australian Greens Senator for Queensland. She took office in July 2011 and is the Australian Greens national spokesperson on environment, biodiversity and natural heritage; mining; Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea; world heritage; population and Cape York.Senator Waters is an environmental lawyer who worked in the community sector for 8 years advising people how to use the law to protect the environment. In 2011 she was named Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of the Year 2010 by the Law Council of Australia.

She is passionate about protecting our environment and public participation and accountability in government. In the Senate she has moved amendments to federal laws to better protect the Great Barrier Reef, promote renewable energy, and protect good quality agricultural land from incompatible land uses. This public lecture will be held from 6.00pm - 7.30pm and will be followed by a networking function until 8.30pm.
