The Global Tuberculosis Pandemic - Mr Mel Spigelman MD

Principal speaker

Mr Mel Spigelman MD

The Eskitis Institute's Decade of Discovery 2003-2013

Tenth Anniversary Lecture Series

Mel Spigelman MD, is President and CEO of the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance), a not-for-profit organization with the mission of discovering and developing significantly better, faster-acting, and affordable tuberculosis treatments.

Dr. Spigelman will review the magnitude of the global tuberculosis (TB) pandemic, its relationship with poverty and its impact on the most vulnerable populations. He will also discuss the increasing problem of TB drug resistance and will describe progress in the TB drug pipeline over the past decade and show how a new paradigm of drug development aims to revolutionize today’s inadequate treatment.

“New approaches to innovation, not only in pure research and development, but also in methodological approaches to drug development, are reshaping the future treatment of TB. We are on the verge of delivering dramatically improved treatments,” says Dr. Spigelman. “We also need to take the next steps to ensure new TB regimens can reach the poorest of the poor, where TB has its biggest and most deleterious impact.”

The Eskitis Institute is a drug discovery research centre. Now in our tenth year, we work to improve health outcomes by research into cancer, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. Our work in the area of global health will have an impact on people in developing nations.
