The talk will discuss the debate over austerity policy in response to the recent global financial crisis and the role of China in rebalancing the global economy.

Leong Liew is the Director of the Tourism Confucius Institute and the former Head of the Department of International Business & Asian Studies at the Griffith Business School. His main research interests are in Sino-US economic relations and aspects of China’s political economy, with a focus on banking and finance, exchange rate policy and centre-local relations. His most recent book (with Harry X Wu) is The Making of China's Exchange Rate Policy (Edward Elgar 2008). He is also the author of numerous articles and book chapters. His articles have appeared in journals such as China Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary Asia, Journal of Development Studies and Public Choice. Recent book chapters of his cover China’s sovereign fund (with He Liping) and the Bank of China. He has consulted for the Asian Development Bank and his research has received support from the Australian Research Council and Global Development Network.
