The Mater Hospital: A Sustainability Journey

The Mater Hospital: A Sustainability Journey

Principal speaker

Mr Chris Hill, Dir. of Environmental Sustainability

This month's Open Lecture is a case study of organisational sustainability planning and implementation at the Mater Hospital in South Brisbane. The ongoing process began three years ago, and has been overseen by Chris Hill, Director of Environmental Sustainability for Mater Health Services Brisbane. This lecture will provide great insight into a practical application of Sustainability theory and research often taught in these lectures.

From his experience, Chris believes top management support and staff engagement are the keys for organisational uptake of Sustainability. To date Chris has led the implementation of over 115 initiatives at Mater around key themes of energy, water, waste, procurement, facilities design, transport and stakeholder engagement. In order to be at the forefront of research, theory and practice, Chris has collaborated with Griffith University and the University of Queensland on a number of Environmental Behaviour studies at Mater and is a member of the Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand and the Business South Bank sustainability committee.

Chris has extensive hospital management experience, having worked for Mater in a wide variety of roles. He was appointed to oversee the Environmental Sustainability platform in March 2010. Chris has a Masters of Environment with the Education for Sustainability specialisation, a graduate certificate in Sustainable Enterprise (both through Griffith University), and diplomas in Sustainability and Project Management.
