‘Chinese Hegemony in East Asian History’

Presented by: Dr Feng Zhang, Lecturer in International Relations, the School of Management and Governance, Murdoch University

Examining China’s historical hegemony in the East Asian region is important both for establishing a historical foundation on which to consider contemporary China’s new, and possibly hegemonic, role in East Asia and for studying this hegemony as a distinct mode of international hegemony in world history. This project explores the strategic and institutional dynamics of international relations in East Asian history when imperial China was the undisputed regional hegemon. It develops a relational theory of hegemonic international relations in East Asian history and emphasizes the importance of understanding relationality in international relations. It argues that imperial China and its neighbors adopted a range of grand strategies in their strategic interactions, including instrumental hierarchy and expressive hierarchy in the case of China and exit, access, deference, and identification in the case of its neighbors. Challenging the tribute system paradigm, it argues that tributary diplomacy did not dominate the institutional practices of regional relations and that it is important to recognize the full range of regional institutions. Finally, it proposes relationalism as distinct critical and normative theory of international relations.

Feng Zhang is Lecturer in International Relations in the School of Management and Governance, Murdoch University. He will join the Department of International Relations at the ANU from January 2014. His research interests include international relations in East Asian history, Chinese foreign policy, and international relations theory.
