Australia in Indonesian Politics, 2009 -2013

At the 6 December meeting of the SE Asia Studies Group will discuss:

‘Australia in Indonesian Politics, 2009 – 2013’

Presented by: Professor Colin Brown, Adjunct Professor, Griffith Asia Institute

The current Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is often said to be the best Indonesian President Australia has ever had: more positive towards Australia than any of his predecessors, and any of his likely successors. In terms of Indonesian public opinion, in late 2011 the Lowy Institute reported that a poll it commissioned had found that “Indonesian attitudes towards Australia have markedly improved and are increasingly positive. [For Indonesians,] Australia is the fourth most warmly regarded country.”

Yet the period of his current – and last – term of office has been marked by a number of incidents which have strained the official relationship, including the temporary banning of the live cattle trade, revelations of spying by Australian officials on Indonesians, and the on-going issue of asylum-seekers arriving in Australia from Indonesia.

Most of the Australian analysis of these events has focussed on the Australian end of the bilateral relationship. In this work in progress report, I want to try to see how these issues have played out in local politics in Indonesia: to examine the extent to which these issues have impacted upon, and been impacted by, Indonesian domestic politics.

Colin Brown is an Adjunct Professor in the Griffith Asia Institute. He has previously held appointments at Parahyangan University in Indonesia and Curtin, Flinders and Griffith Universities in Australia. His main research interests are in modern Indonesian history and politics.
