A Comparison of Multinational and Domestic Firms Across Market Economics: Are Human Resource Management Practices Converging?

A Comparison of Multinational and Domestic Firms Across Market Economics: Are Human Resource Management Practices Converging?

Principal speaker

Associate Professor Elaine Farndale - Penn State University

Abstract: This study explores the globalisation thesis, investigating convergence in a significant field of international business – human resource management (HRM) – from three perspectives: macro-economic, multinational enterprises and market economy.
Based in the comparative capitalisms literature, patterns of HRM practice use are compared over time, between multinational and domestic firms, and between liberal and coordinated market economies.
Data collected at three intervals over a ten year period from nine countries shows considerably more non-convergence than convergence, from all three perspectives, although a quarter of HRM practices do show some trends of convergence.
The findings highlight the embeddedness of HRM within organisational contexts and to some extent challenge popular assumptions that globalisation is leading to a universal model of HRM practice.
