Metamorphorising the research process: reflexivity and imagination

Metamorphorising the research process: reflexivity and imagination

Principal speaker

Professor Mats Alvesson

Abstract: In this paper we take Morgan’s (1980; 1986) idea of using metaphors for understanding organisations further by applying it on the entire research process. Metaphors then become anchoring points and triggers for alternative conceptualisations of the research process and its various components. The overall research process, the point of research, the object of study, purpose, the researcher’s role, the literature review, research design, data, analysis/interpretations, writing and contributions are targeted as themes for metaphor exploration. The overall research can, for example, be metaphorically imagined as a labour process or as a factory. Alternatively, it can be seen as a journey, intellectual adventure or as an artistic performance. Research can be considered as a strategic action (positioning, market segment/ audience targeting, product offering) or as a search process. Data can be seen as a judge (saying yes or no to hypothesis) or a critical dialogue partner. Metaphorising the research process in such a way may facilitate reflection and new perspectives and angles, thus leading to imagination and creativity, but may also provide inspiration for writing less conventional texts.

Speakers: Professor Mats Alvesson is doing research on leadership, organisational culture, knowledge work, critical studies, etc. He has published many books, incl. Reflexive Methodology (Sage, with K. Skoldberg) and The Triumph of Emptiness (Oxford University Press).
