This workshop will give an overview presentation of Conversational Analysis. Since its beginnings in the 1960s, CA has moved from being a marginal field within Sociology associated with Ethnomethodology, to now being an interdisciplinary and internationally significiant approach to the study of naturally occuring conversation and other forms of talk. The presentation will cover some of this history, the reasons for its particular focus on interaction, and the principles that distinguish it from some other approaches to the study of discourse.
