Structural Equation Modelling Workshop

Structural Equation Modelling Workshop

Principal speaker

Dr Stephen Occhipinti

The 1 day structural equation modeling (SEM) course will introduce participants to the theory and practice of doing SEM (with the software AMOS).  The umbrella of SEM covers techniques such as simple path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and full latent variable models.  AMOS is available through Software Services and is part of the SPSS collection of programs (but may not be installed by default).  Like many contemporary SEM packages, a graphical user interface is a major part of AMOS’s functionality.  This makes it very easy to “draw” models but also “too” easy to draw models !   Accordingly, the aim of the workshop is to introduce participants to the basic aspects of SEM through the stages of model specification (according to theory), estimation, assessment of fit and residuals and interpretation.  We will also try to cover some of the common issues and pitfalls of SEM.  Participation in the workshop ought to illuminate the way for later self-guided or workshop-driven instruction and practice with SEM (some excellent reference texts are available).  Experience has shown that coverage of the basic aspects (including reasonable time for participants to practice on supplied datasets) easily fills the day.

N.B. To gain the most out of participation, attendees should ensure they have a good understanding of multiple regression and factor analysis.
