Terrorist Attacks in China: Implications on China’s Foreign Policy and Trade in Resources

Presented by:  Dr. Michael Clarke, Senior Research Fellow, Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University

China has recently suffered two terrorist attacks by Uyghur separatists from Xinjiang – the 1 March mass stabbing attack on bystanders at Kunming train station and the 30 April Urumqi train station bombing – that suggest an intensification of conflict between Xinjiang’s Uyghurs and the Chinese state. This seminar will overview the government’s response to these latest incidents of terrorism, their likely implications for China’s strategy of governance in Xinjiang and their impact on China’s foreign policy in Central Asia and trade.

Dr Michael Clarke is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University. His research interests and expertise include the history and politics of Xinjiang, Chinese foreign policy in Central Asia, and nuclear proliferation and non-proliferation. His recent publications on Xinjiang and the Uyghur include Xinjiang and China’s Rise in Central Asia – A History, (Routledge 2011) and ‘Ethnic Separatism in the People’s Republic of China: History, Causes and Contemporary Challenges’, European Journal of East Asian Studies, 12 (1) (2013), pp. 109-133.
