Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Principal speaker

Associate Professor Neil Sipe

The purpose of this GIS seminar is to assess the spatial analysis needs of researchers in the social, behavioural sciences and humanities.  Participants should come to the seminar having given some thought about how spatial analysis could be applied to their research.   It will serve as a needs assessment and will help us develop future GIS workshops that focus on the needs of researchers.   Griffith University has a site license for ArcGIS (one of the most popular GIS software packages), which includes most extensions and over 100 on-line learning modules.  This license provides free access to the software and learning modules for staff and all registered Griffith University students.

The workshop will have two parts – the first will provide a general introduction to GIS, focusing on a broad range of social science applications.  The second part will be more interactive with the goal of getting participants to think about and discuss how spatial analysis could be used in their research.
