Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in Australia

Presented by: Professor Xu Yi-chong, Professor in the Centre for Governance and Public Policy and the School of Government and International Relations, Griffith University

Foreign direct investment (FDI) made by Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has caused a lot of anxiety in Australia. Some saw it as a problem when Australia lost its top destination status for Chinese FDI in 2013 while others worry about the invasion of Chinese SOEs through their investment in Australian ‘strategic’ industries.

Who from China has been investing in Australia? Why do they do so? Where does FDI go? What do they want to achieve via FDI? Who should regulate them and how? Who should worry about FDI from the Chinese SOEs – Africans, Americans, Australians, Chinese, or Europeans? No answer is straightforward and that may be a reason for concern.

Professor Xu Yi-chong is a Professor in the Centre for Governance and Public Policy and the School of Government and International Relations. Her research expertise is in the areas of energy security; international organisations; nuclear policy in China and elsewhere.

Held in conjunction with Australia China Business Council (ACBC) China Brief Seminar Series draws upon the expertise of leading domestic and international China experts. It provides an informal but informative forum to hear relevant interpretations on developments in China and their wider implications for Australia and the world.
