Spillover from a witch's cauldron:emerging diseases of devils, bats and frogs

Principal speaker

Hamish McCallum

Wildlife diseases are important but underestimated threats to biodiversity. When these diseases spill over into domestic animals or humans, they may  also have significant economic and health consequences. This talk describes
modelling approaches to understanding emerging diseases and spillover in several wildlife disease systems. These include Tasmanian devil facial tumour, which threatens to cause the extinction of the Tasmanian devil; Hendra virus,
which is widespread amongst fruit bat populations but spills over into horse populations and thence into human populations; and chytridiomycosis, an emerging fungal disease, which has already caused the extinction of
numerous frog species in Australia and the Americas.

Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the talk.
