From the Ramayana: Shadow Puppet Drama. Wayang Kulit, 'Abduction of Sinta'

Renowned performer Dr Joko Susilo (Dhalang – puppet master and musical director), with visiting artists Hardjodikoro Soegito (Kendang), Ilona Wright and Julia Pope, and the Queensland Conservatorium Gamelan Orchestra, present "The Abduction of Sinta", a popular and well known episode from the Ramayana through the medium of the Javanese shadow-puppet drama.

In a magical world of music and ancient epic story, the Dhalang manipulates the shadow puppets, narrates the story, speaks through the characters, and sings significant texts. He also directs the Gamelan which provides exciting and beautiful musical support for the drama. Both Javanese and English will be used.

In "Abduction of Sinta", Sinta, the beloved of Rama, is abducted by Rahwana, the demon-king. This episode tells of her capture and Rama's journey to do battle with Rahwana and to free Sinta with the aid of Anoman, the monkey warrior.

Note: Wayang includes stylised battle scenes but is generally suitable for younger as well as older audience members. The Foyer venue allows the audience freedom of movement around the performance space to view from the front (shadow side), back (gamelan side) or above (mezzanine). Seating will also be available.
