Connecting with the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Principal speaker

Ms Ann Grealy

The GSBRC’s “Connecting with…” series targets greater engagement with government agencies, not for profit organisations, and other organisations interested in collaborating with Griffith University-based researchers to achieve better policy and practice outcomes, and in an effort to better understand the partners’ needs and priorities.

In this seminar, the focus will be on the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS): Australia’s national statistical agency, responsible for conducting the five-yearly national census and many other surveys.  Aside from its own published reports and reviews, it hold vast amounts of data available for use by researchers across social, economic, environmental, humanities and related disciplines.  Researchers are increasingly using such data in their own work, because of its high quality, availability and affordability. There are necessarily, though, procedures and protocols for doing so.

This seminar will focus on what data the ABS holds, in what forms, its availability and how to go about accessing it. Ample opportunity to raise questions and issues will be available.
