Asking the Tough Qustions: Routine Screening for Domestic Violence in the Health Services

Asking the Tough Qustions: Routine Screening for Domestic Violence in the Health Services

Principal speaker

Dr Kathleen Baird

Violence against women and children by male partners and ex-partners is a major public issue, resulting in injuries and other short and long term health consequences, including mental illness. Responding to domestic violence should be a priority for health services as healthcare may be a survivor’s first or only point of contact with professionals.

Dr Baird’s presentation will explore the effectiveness of interventions delivered within a maternity and general practice setting which were designed to improve identification, recording and management of domestic violence.

Dr Kathleen Baird is committed to providing woman-centred health care and has maintained this focus throughout all her work and research, with doctoral studies focused on women’s experiences of domestic violence during pregnancy
