Recent developments in Burma (Myanmar)

Presented by Associate Professor Andew Selth, Griffith Asia Institute
Part of the Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar Series.

2015 is an important year for Burma’s transition from a military dictatorship to a more democratic government, and from a relatively closed economy to a more open system. National elections are due to be held around November, followed by the selection of a new president by parliament in early 2016. A wide range of economic, legal, social and other reforms have been promised, and negotiations are continuing with armed ethnic groups for a comprehensive peace settlement. Critical to the resolution of all these complex issues will be the attitude of the armed forces, which continue to exercise a powerful influence over the country’s national affairs. As suggested by recent actions against protesters, the future role of the police force also needs to be considered. Adjunct Associate Professor Andrew Selth has just returned from a research visit to Burma, and will share his thoughts on these and other developments.

Andrew Selth is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Griffith Asia Institute. He has a PhD from Griffith University, and degrees in history and international relations from the Australian National University. In 2012 Dr Selth was awarded a Harold White Fellowship from the National Library of Australia. Dr Selth has been studying international security issues and Asian affairs for 40 years, as a diplomat, strategic intelligence analyst and research scholar. He has published four books and more than 70 peer-reviewed monographs, chapters and articles, most of them about Burma and related subjects.

Research Seminars are held on Thursdays at Nathan Campus, from 12:30 - 13:50 during semester. For more info please contact Belle Hammond on 07 3735 4705 or email b.hammond@griffith.edu.au.
