Griffith Asia Institute - Research Seminars

Principal speaker

Kathleen Lilley

'Unravelling the rhetoric of the Eurocentric global citizen: Does this resonate with Asia-Pacific cultures?'

This seminar reports on research exploring the conceptual, organisational and pedagogical implications of educating global citizens, based on the perspectives of international higher education key informants and mobility students. The findings were found to be consistent with moral and transformative cosmopolitanism and liberal values, rather than elitism. Interestingly, there has been an exponential expansion of liberal education programs around the world with 75% of the new programs occurring in Asia. Similar projects are emerging in countries throughout the Middle East. The aim to educate global citizens is widespread. Yet, there has been limited analysis of how the global citizen is conceptualized by diverse cultural groups.

The seminar will focus on this issue. Seminar participants are invited to contribute their perspectives to inform a GAI-funded seed research project exploring the topic. Anonymous field notes will be taken during the seminar discussion with participants' consent.
