The Circular Ruins

THE CIRCULAR RUINS, A COMPOSED ENVIRONMENT BY BEN MARKS

Jorge Louis Borges' story The Circular Ruins follows the trials of an unidentified man in his efforts to dream into a life a human being. Through meticulous imagining of internal organs (beginning with the heart) and ritual supplication before the deities of fire he succeeds. The only way the dreamed man can know he is a dream is that he is immune to fire: the fire which gave him life. The dreamer, his task is now complete, walks into a raging bushfire only to find himself immune to its flames and realises he too is a dream.

Composer Ben Marks (trombonist with the internationally acclaimed new music ensemble ELISION) invites you to experience overlapping layers of instrumental and environmental sound that bring to life the vivid soundscape of South Bank Parklands. Explore pathways in and around the Rainforest Walk as cellist Katherine Philp, saxophonist Andrew Ball, percussionist Angus Wilson, Ba Da Boom percussion ensemble, and the trombones and horns of the Queensland Conservatorium play music that has been created specifically for the space. This world premiere event is for everyone of all ages, on the evening of Friday May 15th, from 5pm to 5.30pm, beginning on the grassed area under the Brisbane Wheel.
