The Griffith Law School is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion of Australia’s policies, their compliance with international law and the challenges they present to the rule of law.
Panel speakers:
In recent years, Australia has distanced itself from the major treaty governing the treatment of refugees – the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. In amendments to the Migration Act and the Maritime Powers Act late last year, parliament introduced particularly Australian understandings of the definition of a refugee; excused failure to consider Australian international obligations when conducting maritime interceptions; and introduced a new ‘fast track’ system of ‘merits review’ generally dispensing with interviews for applicants for protection.
