How an export boom affects unemployment: a comparison between Australia and Japan

The objective of this study is to find whether a causal relationship exists between changes in the structure of foreign trade and unemployment in Japan. In particular, the relationship between terms of trade (prices of exported goods relative to those of imported goods) and unemployment rate is examined. I use vector error component analysis because of the presence of unit roots and co-integration. The estimated result suggests that the causal relationship from terms of trade to unemployment is not statistically significant for Japan, unlike for Australia.
