Hear from John about how President Xi Jinping's formula of deepening economic reforms while tightening political control is progressing. What is Xi hoping to achieve and can his twin strategies be reconciled?
 
John was China correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in the Fairfax Media stable from July 2007 to June 2013. He is a regular contributor to Foreign Policy magazine and writes occasionally for other publications including Prospect, The International Tribune and Caijing magazine. His work on elite Chinese politics has been well recognised. In Australia he won the 2009 Walkley Award for Scoop of the Year, for first reporting the detention of Australian Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu. In 2014 he won the inaugural Lowy Institute Media prize, which is awarded to reporters who “have deepened the knowledge or shaped discussion of international policy issues in Australia”. 
 
He lived in Beijing for two years in the 1980s, while his father was posted at the Australian embassy. He completed an arts and law degree at Monash University, Melbourne, and joined law firm Hall & Wilcox as a commercial and financial services lawyer. He joined Fairfax in 2002 as cadet reporter and became the Herald’s economics correspondent at Parliament House, Canberra, before being posted to Beijing.   He is author of the short Penguin book, The Rise and Fall of the House of Bo. He has returned to live in Melbourne with his wife and three children. He is working on a second book, The Princelings.
