The 5 Ps of a Successful Academic Career

The 5 Ps of a Successful Academic Career

Principal speaker

Jonathan Doh

In this presentation, Jonathan Doh outlines some lessons and insights from his academic career and those with whom he has worked and observed. Taking a somewhat contrarian view, Jonathan argues for 5 critical elements that, in his view, make for a successful and rewarding academic career. These elements – Passion, Patience, Perseverance/Persistence, Perspective, and Phenomenon – address both internal and external factors that shape and influence one’s academic prospects and outcomes.  He will use the example of the international business field to underscore how these elements come together to drive academic success. In the second part of the presentation, he will focus on a 6th P – Publishing, reflecting on his experience as an author, reviewer, Special Issue Editor, Associate Editor, Senior Editor, Consulting Editor and Editor-in-Chief of well-regarded international journals. In this portion, he will provide some “dos and don’ts” of the publishing game and offer some specific suggestions for how to penetrate the top journals.
