Principal speaker

CL Chiou

Presented by: Professor CL Chiou, Political Science and International Studies, University of Queensland

The election in Taiwan in January this year has been dubbed as ‘an election without drama’ as Ms Tsai Ing-wen became Taiwan’s first female president and the pro-independent Democratic Progress Party seized the majority in the parliament.  A veteran authority in Taiwanese politics, Professor Chiou will examine various aspects of the election, the challenges for the new president, and the future of cross strait relationships.

CL Chiou is Reader in politics (retired) at the University of Queensland.  He is the author of several books on Maoism, democratisation in Taiwan and China and Taiwan-China relations.  He is also a former policy adviser to the President of Taiwan and a political commentator for newspapers and journals in Taiwan.
