2016 represents 70 years of Australian journalists reporting from Indonesia. Join George as he shares anecdotes from his time reporting during one of the most turbulent times of the Australia Indonesia relationship, and how he sees this recurrent volatility in the relationship and its future prospects for the region.
After a brief stint working in Indonesia in 2011, George Roberts was appointed ABC's Indonesia correspondent in Jakarta (2012 to 2015). During this time, he covered some of the most significant tensions in the country's relationship with Australia including asylum seeker boat tragedies and the Australian government’s boat turn-backs, the fallout from revelations of Australian spying, as well as the 2014 presidential election and the execution of two Australian drug smugglers.
Prior to this post he covered Federal Politics for ABC Radio and TV in Canberra, was a multimedia reporter in the Sydney newsroom and was western Sydney reporter for ABC Radio and TV News. He’s also been a radio news presenter and producer for both ABC News and triple j.
