Title

Data sciences research showcase

Abstract

An informal meeting hosted at the Nathan Campus for researchers interested in learning more about the breadth of data science research taking place within Menzies Health Institute Queensland. We will hear short presentations on topics of broad interest to data scientists in the areas of:

Health Economics, Dr Josh Brynes

Statistics, Associate Professor Sama Low-Choy

Bioinformatics, Dr Ping Zhang

Clinical Epidemiology, Professor Robert Ware.

Biography

Professor Robert Ware is Professor of Biostatistics at Menzies Health Institute Queensland. His primary research interest is in developing statistical methods to deal with the impact of attrition in longitudinal studies. He has actively collaborated with clinicians since 2003. He is the investigator responsible for statistical design and analysis on five NHMRC funded longitudinal cohort studies (total funding >$6 million), and has co-authored >250 articles in academic journals.

Associate Professor Sama Low-Choy is Senior Statistician at Griffith, advising researchers on statistical modelling, especially when it is new to their field. This builds on experience advising at QUT, CRCs and EPA. Her research interests include: graphical models of complex systems; structured elicitation of expert knowledge; Bayesian modelling; and statistical paradigms. Outputs include: >200 academic reports/articles, >$4.5M in research grants, and 7 grevillea spp flourishing in clay.

Dr Josh Brynes is a Senior Research Fellow in the Griffith University Centre for Applied Health Economics. His research interest is centred on the evaluation of health policy, technologies and services, including both within trial and modelled economic evaluations. He has authored >50 peer reviewed articles and has attracted more than $10 million of commercial funding to Griffith University.

Dr Ping Zhang is the Group Leader, Bioinformatics at Menzies Health Institute Queensland. Her research interests involve investigating artificial neural networks, artificial intelligence, and data mining.
