The ‘marriage equality' plebiscite is dominating the news. It is the subject of heated dinner-time and social media conversations around Australia. Meanwhile, the Safe Schools initiative has prompted a moral panic in the national media and in Canberra.

Alongside this, nonetheless, is an increase in mainstream media representations of gender fluidity and sexual diversity. With television shows such as Modern Family portraying a gay couple living a ‘heteronormative' lifestyle, transgender actress Laverne Cox gracing the cover of Time Magazine, and celebrities like Caitlin Jenner coming out as transgender, you could get the impression that times are changing. But how far have we really come?

Issues around equity and safety are paramount for our LGBTIQA+ youth. How can we shift seemingly entrenched attitudes to create real and substantial political and cultural change?

Join us to hear our panel speak about moral panic, bullying, Safe Schools, and cultural change.
