Title

Eye tracking: Hidden insights into human behaviour

Abstract

Our eyes move approximately three times a second, relocating our small window of clear vision (around a thumbnail held at arms-length) to places that hold the information that will support our decisions and actions. Researchers have found an intimate connection between where we look and what we are doing, although we are surprisingly unaware of our own eye movements. This means that the study of eye movements provides insights into the underlying cognitive processes of human behaviour that participants are unable to introspectively describe and would be otherwise hidden. Newer mobile eye trackers mean that we are able to bring this area of research closer to naturally occurring behaviour than ever before. In this workshop, we will be giving a brief overview of why eye tracking has become such a useful tool in the study of cognition and behaviour, show examples of actual research projects that have benefited from the technology, and give a demonstration of the Tobii Glasses mobile eye tracker.

Biography

Dr Stainer is interested in how eye movements can reveal the information gathering process that supports human decision making behaviour. He has broadly applied eye tracking in domains such as medical image interpretation, video game playing, and in visuomotor coordination in natural, everyday tasks such as making a cup of tea.

Professor David Neumann expertise lies in the psychology of learning and performance. He seeks to understand the brain processes that underlie performance, focusing largely on attention and anxiety. Due to the fundamental nature of these processes, his research has seen wide application, ranging from sport and exercise, health, and education.
