Hope After Dissolution: Andrew Gall

"It has long been the tradition of pakana culture for the women to impart lore and cultural knowledge to the young when out gathering the necessary shells to be prepared for stringing. As our world succumbs to the realities of climate change, resource scarcity and the cultural homogenisation of globalisation, this element of pakana culture will be lost. After enduring the attempted physical and cultural genocide of colonising Europeans, we continue to face the issue of cultural loss and subjugation. How can I draw upon and reinterpret what has gone before, and make it relevant without losing its integrity how can I help us to continue to share our stories in a meaningful and lasting way? In my contemporary jewellery practice, I am looking at ways to preserve this element of pakana culture. I will create a process which will emulate the traditional gathering process by utilising current and future technologies. Hope After Dissolution is a snapshot of this journey I am on." - Andrew Gall
