"Identifying strengths and enhancing resilience in children on the autism spectrum"
Many people with autism are twice exceptional; that is they have exceptional skills and abilities in relation to either their own overall developmental level (splinter skills) or the typical population (savant skills). Exceptional abilities may be exhibited in areas including: memory, hyperlexia, art, music, calendrical and mathematical calculation. These skills are often considered to be non-functional and obsessive, rather than strengths to be developed. In this presentation Jacqui will discuss the understanding and assessment of these exceptional skills and the development of a curriculum designed to develop these exceptional abilities functionally, to assist learning and social interaction.
Presenter: Dr Megan Clarke
"The strengths and positive attributes of children on the autism spectrum"
For many years people have talked about the deficits associated with autism. However, a deficit focus does not recognise the positive attributes that children on the spectrum have to offer. As we begin to move towards a strength-based understanding of autism, this talk will discuss responses to the following three questions from children on the spectrum: 1) "what are you best at?" 2) "what do you like most about yourself?" and 3) "what do you enjoy the most". Factors that may help or hinder children on the spectrum from using their strengths at home, at school and in the community will also be discussed from the parent's perspective. A focus on individual positive qualities in addition to areas of need will provide a more comprehensive picture of the functioning of children on the autism spectrum.
