Diwakar KC, PhD Candidate, Griffith Business School, Griffith University.

Nepal is a poor South-Asian country with smallholder farming as the mainstay for majority of population. Out of two third of the population engaged in agriculture, 90% are smallholder farmers managing around 67% of total agricultural land of average 0.8 ha size. The agriculture contributes 30% of total GDP and to enhance the overall economy, it is of primary importance to improve livelihood of smallholder farmers. In recent years, value chain (VC) interventions have emerged as one of the dominant approaches for improving livelihood of smallholder farmers in Nepal including other developing nations in Asia.

This presentation summarises the emergence of VC approach and its integration to agri-food industry. It further discusses how profit-oriented business driven - VC framework applied in developed nations shifted focus toward achieving broader development goals for poor and marginalized farmers in developing nations like Nepal and other countries in Asia, Africa and world. This analysis of the presentation will contribute later to my ongoing PhD research for finding answer on whether VC is suitable strategy for improving livelihood of smallholder farmers and reducing global poverty.
