The Australian and New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuse (ANZATSA) is hosting a free information evening available to the public on Wednesday 24th July 2019. The event will involve an hour-long panel discussion moderated by freelance journalist and long-time ABC investigative reporter Nance Haxton. A panel of three speakers will bring together their unique experiences and professional expertise in promoting child safety, and preventing child sexual abuse and exploitation in a range of environments.

Detective Inspector Jon Rouse will present practical and accessible information to parents to better assist them in understanding and monitoring children's behaviour in online environments. He will reflect on lessons learned from the online child exploitation investigations by law enforcement officers across Australia and Internationally.

Professor Martine Powell will discuss how investigative interviewing can better elicit detailed and accurate accounts of an event. She will use her understanding of the psychology of human learning and memory to emphasise the tools that are most likely to lead fair and just treatment of children as victims of sexual abuse.

Hetty Johnston AM will provide information for parents to empower their children with personal safety skills. She will introduce key steps we can all take to build resilience in and protect our children. Hetty will share her knowledge of child focussed education, targeted towards children from their early years through to high school.

Detective Inspector Rouse has 35 years' service with the Queensland Police Service in Australia. In 1996 Jon commenced investigating crimes against children and in 2001 he commenced at Task Force Argos where he implemented Australia's first operation to proactively target internet child sex offenders. Jon has instigated multiple national and international investigations targeting child exploitation criminal networks and has delivered training to law enforcement officers in Australia and across the world. In May 2018 Jon accepted the "Champion for Children Award' in New York from the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children for his dedication for over 24 years to fighting and investigating crimes against children. Jon was awarded the Queensland Australian of the Year for 2019 and is the recipient of the Queensland Police Medal, the National Service Medal the Exemplary Conduct medal the National Police Medal and the Australian Police Medal

Professor Martine Powell is the founding Director for the Centre for Investigative Interviewing, a division of the Griffith Criminology Institute. Martine first became involved in the design and evaluation of interviewer training programs in 1996. Over the next decade she became the go-to person for advice on vulnerable witness interviewing. Then in 2008 a watershed moment led her to rethink the currently accepted training approaches. This set her on a journey that would lead to radically improved training practices that are now attracting interest from around the world. ​

Hetty Johnston AM, is the founder and Executive Director of Bravehearts Foundation. Bravehearts is Australia's leading child protection organisation working together to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child. Bravehearts offers direct support services to survivors of child sexual assault and exploitation, education and prevention programs, research and industry leading child protection training courses to equip those working with children with the knowledge, tools and capacity to create child safe environments. Hetty is known for her outstanding service to the community through a range of organisations promoting the welfare and rights of children

The Wandering Journo, Nance Haxton has proven her excellent reporting track record over more than 20 years with a range of Australian and international awards for her powerful storytelling. Nance's investigative journalism skills have been recognised with numerous awards including Australian journalism's most prestigious honour - a Walkley Award - which she has won twice. Her 2012 Walkley Award for Best Radio News and Current Affairs Reporting recognised her investigative series of stories titled 'Justice System Fails Disabled Victims of Sexual Abuse'. Nance Haxton is also a qualified speech and drama teacher, university lecturer, adept speaker, MC, and moderator. She sees her greatest journalistic skill as empathy - which she learned from her intellectually disabled older brother Ashley.
