Beyond the Surface: Beirut's Political Holes

Joanne Choueiri investigates the "political holes' that have been produced through the demolition of buildings in Beirut, Lebanon by political powers.

During and after its civil war (1975-1990), the Beirut centre endured the destruction of 80% of its urban fabric turning the city into a massive construction site. The political holes were slowly filled up by new buildings erasing the memory of spatial violence ruling the city.

The exhibition seeks to create an archive of these holes that combine a physical and psychological aspect. By using different means to catalogue these physical and psychological holes, the exhibition aims at exposing the political narratives behind their formation.
