The Honourable Susan Kiefel AC
Presented by The Honourable Susan Kiefel AC
Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia
Sir Samuel Griffith died one hundred years ago. His life was marked by conspicuous public service both to Queensland and to the Commonwealth which he helped to bring into existence. This address surveys that life of service, bringing together Griffith's contributions in political and judicial offices. It considers his involvement in Queensland politics as Attorney-General and Premier, his role in the federal movement, his service as Chief Justice of Queensland and then as Chief Justice of the High Court, and his work as a codifier of the criminal law. A focus on his work as a codifier highlights Griffith's openness to foreign ideas in the law, as well as the enduring influence of his work at home and abroad.
