Indigenous health workforce building: University Indigenous students and lecturers' interactions

Principal speaker

Dr Stephen Corporal

Stephen's seminar will focus on his research which explored the influence of Identity, Roles and Expectations on Indigenous students studying at university and the impacts on building the Indigenous health workforce. His study anticipated that research knowledge may be utilised to increase awareness of Indigenous students' attrition rates through a more enhanced understanding of the complex relationships between Indigenous health faculty students and academics.

Critical Race Theory (Identity), Role Theory (Roles) and Self-fulfilling Prophecy (Expectations) were used with Indigenous research methodologies and qualitative research methods.

Stephen will discuss the research outcomes and recommendations pointing towards providing cultural safety training for staff and the recognition of Indigenous peoples ways of doing within the university.
