PDN Live Webinar: An Introduction to Twice-Exceptionality - Gifted Students with Disabilities

Principal speaker

Dr Michelle Ronksley-Pavia

Overview:

In this introductory session, Dr Michelle Ronksley-Pavia will provide an overview of twice-exceptionality. Children who have disabilities, and who also have co-occurring giftedness are described as twice-exceptional-having two exceptionalities, giftedness and disability (often more than one disability). In Australia, the concept of twice-exceptionality is poorly understood. There are a myriad of disabilities that twice-exceptional children may have-and many individuals have more than one; including (but not limited to), dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders (and Asperger's), dyscalculia, central auditory processing disorder, anxiety, depression etc.. In this informative session, Michelle will unpack the concept of twice-exceptionality and how this may show up in a child's educational environment; illustrating this from her vast experience and research with young people. In this session, participants will be engaged in exploring an introduction to what twice exceptionality is and how this may manifest in the classroom.

Key Learnings

- Learn about twice-exceptionality - students who are gifted and also have coexisting (dis)abilities;

- Gain knowledge about understanding twice-exceptional children;

- Understand some of the schooling issues for twice-exceptional young people.
