PDN TAKE 30: HR Practice - The Challenges of Attraction and Retention

Principal speaker

Mr Andrew Peach

Event overview:

All school leaders need an understanding of HR practices. Andrew Peach, Principal at Marsden State High School, was fortunate enough to complete his MBA with a focus on HR, which has helped to shape both his thinking and actions as a principal.

Staff have choice and options, meaning that schools need to ensure their staff environment is welcoming, purpose driven and enables future learning and growth. The days of staff being sent to a school with no input are gone, we all need to consider what we are doing to attract and retain high performing staff in a competitive environment.

Marsden SHS has approximately 3,200 students and has experienced significant growth over the last five years, increasing in size from around 2,000 students in 2017. This has meant that the school has had to become an industry leader in the attraction and retention of staff, culminating in recognition with the 2021 Australian HR Award for Best Graduate Development Program.

In this interactive 30 minute session, Andrew will outline the Performance Management structure that guides Marsden SHS's HR practice, along with the structure for program support developed for the school. Participants are invited to discuss their own HR challenges and strategies, in this collaborative environment that allows participants to learn from fellow leaders.

The school was also a Finalist in a record nine categories and won a further three Excellence Awards. In 2019 Andrew was also recognised as the Queensland College of Teachers TeachX Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning Award winner, and has previously received the Harvard Club of Australia Principal Scholarship to study at Harvard University.
