Thoughts about the origin of Joseph Haydn's 6 String Sonatas

Principal speaker

Dr Gyorgy Deri

This performance presentation examines Joseph Hadyn's 6 String Sonatas. The music is acknowledged as being written for Violin and Viola, but recent research is complexifying this story. There are period copies and published versions for Violin and Cello (Basso), opening the door for these works to be in the repertoire list of every Violinist and Cellist who is interested in early Classic style music. Join Dr Gyorgy Deri as he re-searches through the archives, sharing stories about the historical performance practise of these works, and performing excerpts live with Courtenay Cleary on violin.

Born in 1965 to an extended family of musicians, Gyrogy Deri began playing the cello at the age of five. He studied at the Bela Bartok Conservatory before entering the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. Gyorgy performed extensively throughout Europe as a chamber, ensemble and orchestral musician as well as a soloist before becoming a teacher himself at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. Gyorgy Deri joined Griffith University in 2020 as Senior Lecturer in Cello.
