This session is part of a 6-part series on Foundations of Mixed Methods (FMM). The basics are covered in Introducing MM (Part 1), focusing on context, approach. research questions and theoretical context. We explore easy, visual ways for communicating MM strategies (Part 2), including a conceptual framework for quant/qual empirical research. We demonstrate the variety of strategies for assembling MM studies, when studies use both survey and interview data (Part 3). The conceptual framework underlying MM is discussed in greater detail (Part 4), as a basis for designing the MM and critical reading and writing about MM strategies (Part 5). We provide an example of integrative MM, illustrated for analyzing interview transcripts via thematic/clustering analysis (Part 6).

This workshop shows how conceptual frameworks act as anchoring tools to introduce clarity to early research design and research design communication. At some point, all researchers have been guilty of forgetting the primary focus of their research when faced with large or complex data. This is especially true for mixed methods (MM) research that combines multiple methodologies and data streams. This workshop explains conceptual frameworks as a foundational part of early research design to guide and shape both literature review and research questions. By identifying research variables and clarifying their relationship, a conceptual framework may summarise literature review and "set the stage' for introducing research questions t. Broadly, conceptual frameworks add explicitness to research processes.

Format: This 2-hour workshop is delivered online. The first part focuses on the theoretical introduction of conceptual frameworks and analytic groupwork. The second part illustrates how conceptual frameworks can assist in conceptualising complex theoretical and methodological choices. This is a learner-led workshop, involving pre-workshop participation and in-class discussion.

Should you like to discuss a conceptual framework that you are currently working on, an additional master class (unrecorded) at the end of the session may be accommodated with optional peer attendance.

Who may attend? Advanced beginners. This workshop is aimed towards researchers who wish to improve their skills in describing and providing a clear rationale for MM. The workshop expands on the introduction to visual techniques for representing conceptual workshops (MM2; Visualising MM strategy) and takes a broader view of the role of the conceptual framework beyond analysis of surveys and interview data (MM3; Mixing methods to analyse surveys/interviews).

Preparing for the workshop: This is a learner-led workshop. The more you contribute, the more you will take away. I request your help with the following preparations. (1) During registration, please note questions that you have about conceptual frameworks. (2) Use an online shared document to access pre-reading that are required or recommended. (3) Use the Discussion Forum section in the shared document to ask any questions prior to workshop. (4) Start a conversation with fellow learners by sharing resources on the topic.
