Principal speaker

Ausma Bernot

This session is part of a 6-part series on Foundations of Mixed Methods (FMM). The basics are covered in Introducing MM (Part 1), focusing on context, approach. research questions and theoretical context. We explore easy, visual ways for communicating MM strategies (Part 2), including a conceptual framework for quant/qual empirical research. We demonstrate the variety of strategies for assembling MM studies, when studies use both survey and interview data (Part 3). The conceptual framework underlying MM is discussed in greater detail (Part 4), as a basis for designing the MM and critical reading and writing about MM strategies (Part 5). We provide an example of integrative MM, illustrated for analyzing interview transcripts via thematic/clustering analysis (Part 6).

Critical reading and writing of mixed methods involves appraisal and justification. This session looks at the core theoretical concepts of mixed methodologies (MM) and unpacks common difficulties in explaining and justifying the choice of MM study design aspects in academic writing. An immersive part of the workshop offers a hands-on active learning element of designing, conceptualising, and explaining the choice of a MM study. The workshop also "reverse-engineers' one checklist for appraising mixed methods to showcase how writing affects the perceived quality of MM. We end the workshop by explaining how conceptual frameworks can help justify research design decisions and, finally, equip participants with a theoretical toolset to assist critical reading and writing of MM.

Note: We do not discuss multi-methods in this workshop, although researchers employing multi-methods may benefit from the examples examined in the workshop.

Format: This 2-hour workshop is delivered online. The first part focuses on the theoretical introduction of conceptual frameworks, and the second part guides participants to analyse the use of conceptual frameworks in published research. This is a learner-led workshop, involving pre-workshop participation and in-class discussion.

Who may attend? Advanced beginners. This session builds on previous MM sessions, thus participants will benefit more if they can attend most preceding sessions. This workshop has different focus to, and complements, the Critical Inquiry on Method pair of workshops (CIM1: Rose/Low-Choy; CIM2 Low-Choy/Rose).

Preparing for the workshop: This is a learner-led workshop. The more you contribute, the more you will take away. I request your help with the following preparations. (1) During registration, please raise questions that you have about conceptual frameworks. (2) Use an online shared document to access pre-reading that are required or recommended. (3) Use the Discussion Forum section in the shared document to ask any questions prior to the workshop. (4) Start a conversation with fellow learners by sharing resources on the topic.
