With Australia hosting the three most important Mega Sporting Events (and more!) in the next 10 years, Australia has the opportunity to be the world leader in sport and human rights. This includes setting the sport and human agenda for the region by building upon our Sports Diplomacy policy. We have a proven track record of strengthening communities through sport and are perfectly positioned to build human rights capacity through those programs. While Australia has a sporting legacy that is unrivaled around the world and individual Australians are leaders in the global human rights movement we have not necessarily been a leader as a country in the field of human rights. We now have the opportunity to change that at the nexus of sport and human rights. The field is new and open for leadership. Australia has the opportunity to set the agenda and lead the rest of the world, but it will require looking beyond our borders, working with international coalitions, and understanding what human rights means to Australians and to those in our region.
