For contemporary artists, particularly artists working within the context of their cultural heritage at the intersections of race and gender, the notion of renovating the canon of art history poses an extraordinary challenge. Should we instead focus on the notion of a future history led by the narratives, aesthetic concerns and autonomy valued by communities in the present?
