Sediment explores the relationship between architecture and geology in Brisbane. This exhibition reflects upon the geological and urban morphologies of Brisbane, and South-East Queensland, through architectural drawing, models and digital scanning.
In the nineteenth century, John Ruskin and others had first argued for the connection between geology and aesthetics, at the same time as Australia was experiencing rapid industrialisation. Current advances in geological and architectural scanning technology, as well as the emergence of artificial intelligence, enable new modes of visualisation and fabrication which can reimagine the geological crust we occupy, and how humans and machines have interacted with it.
Using these technologies, Sediment investigates architecture through the lens of geology, and in the context of Brisbane. The exhibition features analogue and digital drawings, models, and installations that will evolve over the duration of the exhibition to develop an architectural mapping of the city and its geology
